Within easy reach - KENNAL VALE
Kennal Vale
Only 6 mins away from Chy BianThe Kennal Vale Nature Reserve and it’s woodland has always been a source of timber, bark and charcoal. The river Kennall had once been used to power a corn mill, paper mill and blowing house (tin smelting.) In 1812 a gunpowder works was established in Kennall Vale. Again the river was great for supplying power and the sheltered valley and trees made it more of a safe environment. By the mid 19th century it was Cornwall’s most important producers of gunpowder. In 1919 a quarry also opened up in the reserve. The granite, which Cornwall is renowned for, was particularly fine and was used to prepare memorials for the First World War. Because Kennall Vale has had such a rich industrious history you can find many of the relics and derelict buildings still still here today. In its heyday the factory was a 50-building complex producing gunpowder for the mining industry from 1812 until it closed around 100 years later. It’s not a typical tourist destination, but if you enjoy exploring abandoned buildings then this one is worth visiting! Under the tree canopy everything is covered in green moss with ferns and trees growing within many of the old buildings. The old quarry is flooded and has a granite rock face rising out of the clear water. It is a beautiful and tranquil place to visit.
